‘Wine Women & Song’ is a three-evening program commencing Sunday June 26 at 6pm and showcases six outstanding local female performers in both solo and duo formats over the course of the program. All performances will take place in the beautiful Green Room.

Penny Ikinger and Katankin kick off the first evening, on Sunday June 26, both in solo mode.

Penny Ikinger is an antipodean rock maestro who defies easy comparison and definition. With her iconic guitar, the Pennycaster, she is a fuzz queen, sonic chanteuse and primal mistress of dark folk who wows her audiences at home in Australia and beyond.

Penny’s impressive career started as guitarist in Wet Taxis with Louis Tillett, going on to perform and record with many acclaimed artists such as Deniz Tek (Radio Birdman), Kim Salmon, Tex Perkins and the Sacred Cowboys. In 2003 Penny launched out on her own and her undeniable solo talents began to be noticed. Since then, she has earned an international reputation for her solo work.  She will be performing solo at this event.

Katankin is the solo moniker of singer-songwriter, instrumentalist, and producer Helen Catanchin. Formally trained as a jazz singer, Katankin was born from the artist’s desire to return to her singer-songwriter roots, and integrate pop and electronic elements into her works.

Katankin is the phonetic spelling of her Russian surname (allowing its correct pronunciation for the first time in the singer’s life), and further symbolises this return to one’s roots, to one’s true self. Helen’s uniquely warm tone – simultaneously earthy and incredibly pure – and a true bard’s ability to deftly expose the beating heart of every song, along with her poetic and poignant song writing style, all put their unmistakable stamp on Katankin’s songs.

This event made possible thanks to City of Port Phillip’s Live and Local program.
